collaborative podcast

ok girls, we need to get started on our podcast that's due this sunday. what does everyone want to talk about? we have to pull 2 ideas from the text to discuss as well. i'm not sure if it needs to be 1 to 2 minutes per person or just total. anyway, i'd like to get rolling on this cuz i don't have much time later in the week. thanks guys!

  1. I agree with you that we should get it going...I was thinking about talking about Chapter 8 of building connections and branching out since with weather we are checking out other locations in the world...let me know if that sounds ok?

  2. yeah i like that idea. do we each need to do 2 different ideas, or just 2 per group? i was thinking we could use google docs, from chapter 3. students can upload or create spreadsheets and share, manage, and manipulate data online. this would be perfect for collecting the data and observations they make about the weather in their area. also, they can upload information in other parts of the world and compare them.

  3. 2 per group I think...and yea that sounds good to use...I just dont know exactly what she wants us to talk about? So I will just talk about how our group will connect with others around the world to talk about weather?

  9. yea I have a math project that I am doing tonight so I wont be able to do so. I think if we just post on here what we are going to say like recommended we will be fine, but let me know if we need to set up other arangements. Also with us having to do two per person I guess I will do two different things from Chapter 8...do you think that would be ok since they are the same chapter? Also we have to figure out which order we will go in so that it makes sense...

  10. so if i said something like this would this be ok? and then ashleigh you could talk about skype?

Since extending the learning experience beyond the classroom is a goal of most 21st century projects we have many digital tools to make this possible. With integrating technology this helps students to reach an authentic audience. One way of doing so is by allowing your students to connect with experts. Since we are collecting data on weather I would have a meteorologist from a local news station come into the classroom to allow my students to ask questions about their project. In advance of this taking place I would have my students brainstorm good questions to ask. After talking with an expert and conducting research to compare different weather around the world I would then have the students expand their findings to not only our one classroom but participants from distant countries and continents. They could talk with other students by exchanging videos, blog entries or other forms of communication such as skype.

  11. sure that sounds fine. but i'm guessing that if we have to do 2 per person, it should also be 1 to 2 minutes long per person.. you might want to add to yours.

Skype alows students to reach other countries pretty easily. All the teacher needs to do is purchase a cheap webcam and download the program. It's free to use as long as you are not making calls with it. Students aren't limited to just two way communication either with Skype, they can host a conference call with any reasonable size. Imagine your students going home and saying: "I talked with my collaborators in Singapore and Tokyo today."
Skype is a great way to get students involved in weather around the world. They can talk to other students in different countries and see how their weather differs. Some countries may have never seen snow before and that would be very exciting for them.
Another great tool for students to use is Google Docs. Google Docs is a web-based tool for making sense of data. Students would collect information about the weather happening in their town, and post it on the internet. They can also get the weather from other countries when they talk to other students using Skype. Google Docs is an application that allows users to upload or create spreadsheets and share, amanage, and manipulate data online. There is no need to download anything, it's all on their website: http://docs.google.com. Google docs allows everyone in the group access in order to add and manage the data. Even students that are in the other countries could visit the spreadsheet and edit it if need be.
These are great ways for students to collaborate with students in different regions. There are a few other great ways to work collaboritively however, such as using a wiki.

then molly you can start your part... let me know what you guys think. hopefully mine is long enough haha

obviously, at this point i would lead into what molly's s

  14. "Getting your students to be able to reach students in other countries is a great project to incorporate into the classroom. As discussed earlier they can learn about the weather in other countries or regions as well as many other details that most students wouldn’t have the ability to experience. Web-based applications and services are a good way to help meet the needs necessary for the project. Wiki is one way to link the tools together. A wiki is an easily edited web page. Users can create pages of sharable content using a browser and the most basic markup language to format text, add web links, or build new pages. Collaborators can write and edit together. A wiki can be open to anyone or require a password. They can also be fixed so collaborators can learn about new content as it changes. A wiki is a great tool for developing information that flows.

In education, wikispaces are popularly used. They are a wiki hosting sight and are a form of a blog that is useful for drafting iterations of work and sharing works in progress, especially when other group members are involved. They aim at simplicity and are great tools for building communities.
Wikispaces gives groups the freedom to publish pages that are long-lived, regularly updated, and built by many contributors. They give you the space to both publish and discuss content, without tangling the two together. Wikispaces is built to work anywhere, anytime. All you need is a web browser and an Internet connection. Members can create pages and spaces without undue restrictions or rules. Guests can edit pages without creating an account and use different designs and fonts to spice it up."
